Overview:

I interned as a UX/UI designer at PinOn Inc. in the summer of 2019. My job was to design customer-facing and business-facing products.

The business-facing product leverages big data to provide businesses with a Smart Sales Solution so they can customize their menus and interact with their customers in a way traditional menus can't.

What is PinOn?

PinOn is a web-app-based Smart Menu System that enables customers to access the menu directly on their phones by scanning the QR Code or by clicking the web link. At the same time, PinOn leverages big data to provide businesses with a Smart Sales Solution so they can customize their menus and interact with their customers in a way traditional menus cannot.

My objectives

One of my main objectives during this internship is to collaborate with another designer and design:

  1. Customer-facing product

  2. Business-facing product

The business-facing product provides data visualization around customer behavior and provides data insights into each transaction, which helps businesses understand their customers and grow profits.

Define

To begin with, I conducted interviews with different restaurant businesses to understand and assess users' real needs. After several interviews, I found what businesses actually want from the PinOn Business-facing product were: Data visualization, individual item performance, tracking order/transaction history, menu customization, creating/edit promotions to attract customers, etc. Other key insights are as follows:

Plan

In this step, I have done multiple research online and competitor analysis to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the competitors within the market, strategies that will provide our product with a distinct advantage, and any weaknesses that can be exploited. I have also drawn a mind map that represents ideas and features that will be included in our business-facing product.

Design

My design process is divided into multiple steps, starting with hand sketches, wireframes, and then prototypes based on the UI library I have created. When doing the paper sketches, I talked with the project manager and decided on what features should be kept, what should be removed, and what should be left for future Sprints.

Data insights

The data insights page provides some general information about the customers and sales performance. On the top part of the screen, there is some information about the visitors and overall performance. On the bottom part of the screen, there is an infographic about the sale of some items.

Customer details

This page contains more detailed information about the visitors or customers who have used PinOn customer-facing products over a certain period of time. The business can also keep track of returning or new customers.

Item performance

This page gives detailed information about each item on the menu. There are two tables that contain the top growing/fading items; best/worst seller items. There is also a more detailed table containing all information about each item.

Inventory

Business owners can access this page to edit the inventory status of each item on the menu, or add/edit/delete discounts on a certain item.

Sales performance

On the sales performance page, business owners can have a better understanding of the sales each day. The graph on the top gives business owners the sales trend during a certain period of time.

Coupons

Business owners can create/edit or remove a coupon promotion. The process is straightforward, and all the owners need to do is select the item to be promoted, set an expiration date, and the maximum number for the coupon.

Menu edits

On this page, business owners can add/edit or remove an item from the menu. The items are divided into different categories. Each item contains photos /videos, a brief description, ingredients, and nutrition information.

iPad design

I have also designed a "lite" or the iPad version of the PinOn business-facing product. This product is designed as a simple POS (Point of Sales) system. Businesses can keep track of every transaction, view the detailed order history, or issue a refund for individual items or for the entire order.

Receipt design

Those are the receipt I have designed for the PinOn product. The above three receipts will be printed after the customer has placed an order. The customer's copy, kitchen's copy, and merchant's copy will be printed accordingly.

What I've learned

What I've learned

Cross-team collaboration

During each iteration process, I have communicated with cross-team members, including developers, marketing teams, etc.

Time management

Since we followed the agile product development process, we have limited time to do this project. So I have to manage such a short amount of time wisely in order to not fall behind schedule.
