Overview:

In Fall 2019, I started my career at Infosys, and the first project I worked on was to design a mobile app for the local festival: PVDFest. The goal of this project is to leverage the use of digital technology to further enhance the PVD Festival experience for the attendees, organizers, and content generators.

Context

What is PVDFest?

Hosted by FirstWorks, Providence City Council, and the City of Providence Department of Art, Culture, and  Tourism, PVDFest is a staple for summers in Providence, and for the past six years, has transformed downtown into a center for live music, dance, food, and visual art installations for both residents and visitors to experience.

The opportunity: a digital transformation

We found there is an opportunity to leverage the use of digital technology to further enhance the PVD Festival experience for the attendees, organizers, and content generators.

Discovery

Understand the users and the affordances of the technologies, based on interviews, research, data, review of existing strategies and plans.

Concepting

Establish shared goals and motivate vision for the desired future state. Sketch wide, deep, and wild, then keep the best 1%.

Prototyping

Bring the future vision to life through powerful visual communication to clarify, inspire, and align.

Testing

Reflect on research findings, original visions, goals, and KPIs to make it better. Deliver the designs to the development team.

Scale & learning

Continue to assess, and learn to drive continuous improvement, scalability, and growth.

Interviews & online surveys

We conducted interviews with previous visitors and members of the planning committee to assess their thoughts, feelings, and major touch points throughout their experience at PVDFest. To gather more data on PVDFest attendees, we also sent out a mixture of open and closed questions that helped us learn more about not only the attendee's pain points but also what they enjoy most about PVDFest.

Affinity map

After our stakeholder interviews, we created an affinity map to organize the vast data into groups and identify common themes in order to better understand what pain points we can address within our design.

Personas

Based on our studies, researches, and interviews, we have narrowed down our users into three categories:

  1. Attendees (the planners):
The planners are attendees who like to plan ahead before the festival takes place. They like to follow the scheduled route.

  2. Attendees (the explorers):
The explorers are attendees who don’t plan before the festival and like to explore the area and try different things.

  3. Committees:
The committees are the people who plan the festival and have the credential to the admin side of the mobile app to make changes to the schedule.

The solution

We created a mobile app that enhances the festival experience for attendees and the planning committee. The app will list all the events, suggest trending events, and display an interactive map that eases the festival. The app will also have an admin portal where the planning committee can edit the information by using her phone.

Homepage & search

The homepage consists of cards for different events and is sorted by categories. Clicking the card will lead to the event/artist page.

The Search bar enables the user to search for a specific event. The results are the events that contain the keyword that the user entered.

Schedule & favorites

The schedule page lists all the events happening on one day, sorted chronologically. There is also an indicator of events that are happening right now to show the crowdedness.

The favorited events will be shown in the Favorites tab. Users can toggle between the schedule and favorite tab by clicking the toggle below the header.

Artist/event page

The artist/event page consists of the scheduled time, the social media links, the stage performed, and a short presenter or event bio. Users can favorite or unfavorite the event or artist by clicking the heart-shaped icon. At the bottom, there are tags that the events belong. Clicking the specific tag will lead to the schedule page with the tag filtered on.

Interactive map

The interactive map will show the facilities, food carts, and stages of the festival. It will also show the highlighted events. Clicking on a specific facility will show where it is located on the map. The user can search for anything they want. The user can also filter the results.

Settings

The setting page will let the user customize the mobile app. The user can edit the notification settings and switch the language from English to Italian, Spanish, etc. There is also information about the PVDFest, Parking & Transportation, and FAQs offered. The privacy information is located at the bottom.

Admin portal

The admin portal is accessible only to the planning committee and is accessed by entering a special credential. The admin can use this portal to edit event information. The admin can edit the start time, the duration, and the stage performance. He/she can also delete the event, and all the edits will be shown on the attendee's phone as a form of notification.
